TrajanRuled 98 CE - 117 CE
Trajan was one of the most successful emperors in his military campaigns. His skill in warfare allowed Rome to reach its greatest extent under his rule.
Trajan started out as a military general under both Vespasian and Domitian. His most well known feat was his defeat of the Dacians. Although losing a few battles, he managed to defeat Decebalus, the Dacian king, at Sarmizegethusa in 102 CE. He also defeated the Parthians and their king, Chosroes. He also crushed many revolts during his time of rule, like the rebellions in Selucia and Armenia. Most of these were started by rebellious Jews, but were crushed on a great scale by Trajan and his war generals. Trajan also created other reforms in Rome as well. His most well known reform was a change in the custom of alimenta, a program of public assistance of free-born children. He also increased the number of provincial officers there were in the Senate. Trajan died of illness on his way home from Ctesiphon, and appointed Hadrian as his successor. |
