RomulusThe First King of Rome
When Romulus first came into power, he built upon the Palatine Hill, the hill he had waited on for the omen of the gods. He made the Capitoline Hill an asylum for criminals, and created senatorial seats in Rome.
One of his less admirable feats was his plan to take the Sabine women to Rome and force them to stay. He invited the tribe to the Consualia festival, and took the women away. Conflict arose between the 2 tribes, but in the end, they made peace, and began a peaceful partnership. Romulus' wife was Hersilia. Romulus' death is debated. It is said that he was consumed by a thunderstorm and disappeared from the Earth, finding his home with the gods. However, it is most likely that a group of senators ambushed him and murdered him. |
