Marcus AureliusRuled 161 CE - 180 CE
Marcus Aurelius is seen as a fairly thoughtful and more reserved emperor of Rome. He had significant achievement in war, but also managed to strengthen Rome's power internally in some pretty magnificent ways.
When Marcus Aurelius first came into power, he placed his brother, Lucius Verus, on the throne with him. While Verus went to deal with the Parthians, Aurelius took on duty against the Marcomanni and the Quadi. Although he lost to them in the first Marcomannic War, he succeeded in the second. In the Third Marcomannic War, he defeated both tribes and established their lands as Roman provinces. As emperor in Rome, Marcus Aurelius took great care in regulating law and legislature in the state. He was known as the most conscientiously just emperor. He was also very devoted to Stoic Philosophy, and wrote his work, The Meditations, while he was away at war against the Marcomanni. Marcus Aurelius died peacefully in Vindobona, modern day Vienna. |
