In the Beginning...The beginning of Rome is often accredited to mythology. It began with a pair of twins, sons of Mars, the god of war, and Rhea Silvia. Rhea Silvia was a virgin priestess of Vesta, but broke the rules of her priesthood by having children. Thus, she was killed, and her children were sent off to be exposed. However, they were saved by a loving she-wolf, and were carried to safety. They were discovered by a shepherd named Faustulus and his wife, Acca Larentia. They grew up, and the twins, Romulus and Remus, wanted to found a city.
They began to argue over what location of have their city, and violence escalated quickly. Romulus killed Remus, and established his city on the Capitoline. This was the birth of Rome. |
