Ancus Marcius, unlike his predecessor, was more focused on building up Rome than attacking other powers.
In Rome, Ancus Marcius created various building projects and improved society in various ways. He created the Pons Sublicius, the bridge over the Tiber river that connected Rome to the Janiculum hill, which he also incorporated into Roman territory. He also built the Tullianum, a large scale dungeon. Finally, he created ports at Ostia and began taking advantage of the salt mines in its area. Ancus Marcius also created various social changes. He created the Plebeian class of citizens, the average inhabitants. He also adopted the custom of ius fetiale, or the throwing of spears on the ground to signify the start of a war. Ancus Marcius died peacefully. |
