Julius CaesarJulius Caesar is probably the most well known figure from the Roman Republic, and his legacy shines through in various modern productions, such as the Shakespearian play of the same name.
Caesar was born into a patrician family and became very well known as a political figure in Rome, due to his great part in resolving the Catilinarian Conspiracy. He also became a part of the First Triumvirate, along with Pompey and Crassus. They created alliances and worked together to secure power in Rome. Caesar then showed his military side, taking control of Transalpine Gaul and expanding control further into their territory. When he returned, his alliance with Pompey was beginning to fade and Crassus was killed while fighting the Parthians. Caesar was declared a public enemy after crossing the Rubicon river, and the Roman Civil War took place. Thus, Caesar and Pompey became enemies, and their conflict ended when Caesar defeated Pompey's forces at Pharsalus and Pompey was later killed in Egypt. After this, Caesar was given the dictatorship for an unspecified period of time. He increased the number of senators and created various pieces of architecture that glorified both him and his familial line. However, the day of his death came rapidly, and on March 15th, 44 BCE, a group of senators envious of his power took part in his assassination, stabbing him 23 times. |
