Numa PompiliusThe Second King of Rome
Numa Pompilius was a Sabine man who increased the distinctiveness of Roman culture and identity.
Numa increased religious rites in Rome. Firstly, he built the Temple of Janus, which was used to indicate whether Rome was at peace or at war. He also established the flamines, special priests, and especially those such as the Flamen Dialis, the chief of the worship of Jupiter. He incorporated the cult of Vesta, created the Salii, who were the jumping priests of Mars, and, finally, established a temple to Jupiter Elicius. Numa also fixed the dates of the calendar, establishing a system of 12 lunar months. He also created lawful and unlawful days (fas and nefas) for business. He died peacefully. |
